Sounds like this was a pretty legendary race. Here's a report from a friend in VA. He posted this on a local website up there. I'm just copying it here. Pretty good report with some good pics.
David Knight completely dominated everyone at Snowshoe and held a 10+ minute lead at times. It was the biggest lead in GNCC history. The GNCC has gone away from it's roots over the past few years and the riders have gotten soft. This one was one from the old days and it definitely seperated the men from the boys. Knight's bike was already washed, on the podium, and he was being interviewed by the time Barry Hawk crossed the line in 2nd.
Jimmy Jarrett was 3rd. I have hundreds of pics and I'll post some when I get time. I can't even describe this race. Mud covered dirt bikes leaned against Starbucks, watching races from the hot tub, unfreakinbelievable! The most awesome event ever, far surpassing the Blackwater 100! There were places in the course that completely stopped everyone in the race except for Knight. There was a ton of wide open stuff but several miles of it were downright brutal. What a weekend, I just hope it returns next year. Here's Knighter taking the checkers after nearly 100 miles of h///.
There were tons of deep ruts, big hills, gigantic mudholes, Volkswagen sized rocks, and massive bottlenecks. Knight had it won early on and never let up. What an awesome place to have a race. These pics don't do justice to how bad some of it was. In some places there was so much action that I didn't have time to get out the camera.
Not your typical GNCC podium setting.
Dawson and Barry Hawk at the start.
He might not be riding but he's still the man. My brother and I talking about the good ol' days with the legend, Scott Summers.
Legends:
8 Time Natl. Enduro Champ di// Burleson #8x
The Pentons.
Multi Time GNCC Champ and Blackwater Legend. Ed Lojak.
KTM was sure proud of their new Quad. They had 3 of them on the mountain and they made sure that one of them was visible everywhere you went
That so brings back the memories of that race. LOL It was truly legendary. It was compared to the Blackwater 100 many times during the weekend. I so believe it. It was plumb crazy. I had a blast and I don't know why. LOL But I somehow enjoy those hard races as it really taxes you and shows your grit I guess.

I did a 24 hour mountain bike race up there around 1992 (granny gear productions, 24 hours of Canaan). crazy stuff. rained for three days before the race. Loop was about 18 miles. I remember my odo showed about 4-6 miles per lap. other than that, it was drag/carry/throw the bike for the rest of it. first and last 24 hour race for me thank you very much.
It is funny, you talk to people that rode the course and it seems that most had a found feelings toward it even though it was the toughest GNCC in years most have said. It seems that the harder ones seem to be the most fun after you recoop. LOL
